How something as simple as the words we choose can make an extraordinary difference in someone’s day.
Words Have a Lasting Impact
Have you ever received a compliment that stayed with you for years? Perhaps someone recognized your kindness, encouraged you during a difficult time, or simply told you how much you were appreciated. We often underestimate the power of our words. A thoughtful sentence can restore someone’s confidence, ease a difficult moment, or create a memory that lasts a lifetime. And sometimes, the kindest words arrive when we need them most.
An Ancient Lesson for Modern Life
Thousands of years ago, the Book of Proverbs offered this beautiful observation:
“Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and healing to the bones.” — Proverbs 16:24
What a lovely image: words compared to honey, something naturally sweet and nourishing. The message is timeless. Just as food sustains the body, kindness can nourish the spirit. Although we live in a world very different from the one in which these words were written, our need for encouragement, understanding, and compassion hasn’t changed.
The Small Gestures We Sometimes Forget
As we move through life, especially after decades of raising families, managing responsibilities, building careers, and navigating relationships, it’s easy to assume that the people closest to us already know how we feel.
We assume our spouse knows we’re grateful. We believe our children understand how proud we are of them. We imagine our friends realize how much their companionship means.
But why leave those feelings unspoken?
A simple “I’m proud of you,” “Thank you for always being there,” or “You make my life better” can mean more than an elaborate gift.
Often, the smallest expressions of appreciation create the most meaningful connections.
Kindness Doesn’t Mean Avoiding Difficult Conversations
Speaking kindly doesn’t mean agreeing with everyone or pretending that everything is wonderful.
There will always be moments when we need to express disappointment, establish boundaries, or address uncomfortable truths.
But even difficult conversations can be approached with dignity and compassion.
We can disagree without humiliating someone. We can be honest without being unnecessarily harsh. We can correct a misunderstanding without turning it into an argument.
Sometimes, the difference between a conversation that strengthens a relationship and one that damages it is simply the way we choose our words.
The Words We Say to Ourselves Matter, Too
Perhaps one of the most overlooked forms of kindness is the way we speak to ourselves.
How often do we criticize our appearance, dwell on mistakes, or compare our accomplishments with those of others?
As women, many of us have spent years encouraging everyone around us while holding ourselves to impossible standards.
What if we offered ourselves the same understanding we so readily give a friend?
Instead of saying, “I’m too old to begin something new,” perhaps we could say, “I have the experience and wisdom to try something different.”
Instead of focusing on what we haven’t accomplished, we might appreciate how far we’ve come.
Kindness begins with others, but it also deserves a place in our own hearts.
A Little Wisdom to Carry With You
The beauty of Proverbs 16:24 is its simplicity. We don’t need special occasions or grand gestures to make someone’s day better.
We simply need to pay attention.
Offer a sincere compliment. Send an encouraging message. Thank someone for something they do every day. Tell a friend how much her friendship means to you.
And perhaps most importantly, be gentle with yourself.
A kind word costs nothing, but its value can be immeasurable.
Something to Think About
When was the last time someone’s words truly lifted your spirits?
And whose day could you brighten with a few thoughtful words today?
Sometimes the smallest kindness leaves the longest-lasting impression.
